Residence Permit for Investment Activity (ARI)

Portugal's ARI is a temporary residence route for eligible third-country nationals who complete and maintain one of the investment or job-creation options administered by AIMA.

Application and renewal functions are available through AIMA's ARI portal. [2]

Eligibility

  • Third-country nationals who carry out an eligible investment activity, personally or through a qualifying company, may apply subject to the statutory conditions. [1] , [3]
  • Applicants must maintain the qualifying investment for at least five years from grant. [1]

Investment or income mechanism

  • Create at least 10 jobs. [1]
  • Transfer at least EUR 500,000 for research, at least EUR 250,000 for arts or cultural heritage, or at least EUR 500,000 into qualifying non-real-estate collective investment funds. [1]
  • A EUR 500,000 company investment route is available subject to specified job-creation or job-maintenance conditions. Direct or indirect real-estate investment does not qualify under the listed options. [1]

Residence and family conditions

Family
Family reunification is available subject to the general rules. [1]
Work
The permit holder may reside and work in Portugal. [1]
Presence
At least seven days in the first year and at least 14 days in each subsequent two-year period. [1]
Duration
Two years for the initial temporary permit. [1]
Renewal
Renewable for successive two-year periods while the conditions continue to be met. [1]
Later outcome
Permanent residence or naturalisation may be requested separately if the applicable conditions are met; ARI does not make either outcome automatic. [1]
